Before joining Ayrshire College I was a joiner within the family business. Whilst I enjoyed the work, I wanted to do more and experience a bigger challenge in the construction industry. I had always had a notion of working in surveying and this course seemed the ideal place to start.
I’ll admit I thought coming back into education would be difficult, but I was pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere in the college is both relaxing and supportive. I was apprehensive about being the oldest in class but I found that there was a good blend of ages, skills and backgrounds. Overall, I found my whole college experience very positive.
The course opened my eyes to health and safety in the workplace. I also really enjoyed learning about the commercial side of the industry and developing my managerial skills. I was in a class with a lot of clever and talented people, which makes this award all the more surprising. It genuinely is an honour to have won!
I would highly recommend Ayrshire College. I have learned so many skills which will stand me in good stead as I move onto Glasgow Caledonian University to begin a degree in Quantitative Surveying.
Cameron Bell, Curriculum Manager for Construction, Technology and Trades said “During his year at college Kevin was an exemplary student, producing the highest standards of work, including an unprecedented 100% in his graded unit.
“Kevin was always keen to get involved in the wider work of the college. He met Education Scotland to discuss the course and volunteered to provide details of his college experience in a presentation to the Ayrshire College Board of Management.
“As a mature student, Kevin brought a wealth of experience from the construction industry, which he put to good use by assisting the younger members of the class who had entered the course directly from school.”
