After completing 5th year at Loudoun Academy I managed to secure an apprenticeship with Character Joinery/Transition Interiors. I attended at the Ayr Campus block release to complete an SVQ in Carpentry and Joinery.
I have always wanted to be a joiner. I always enjoyed practical subjects and knew from school that I would be best suited to a craft based job which was hands-on.
I thoroughly enjoyed my time at college. My lecturers were more than helpful. They taught me so much. It was great to be able to apply what I was learning at college to my job. I was really able to put my skills into practice.
As well as the practical skills I learned, I developed my IT, communication and planning skills. I feel I grew as a person, becoming more sociable and confident. I got along well with my classmates who were all apprentices attending college block release. We supported each other and shared experiences.
It’s great to have won this award. I feel proud of and my employer is really pleased.
I’ll soon complete my trade test and become a time served joiner. Although I will not need any further qualifications I plan on returning to college to study the HNC Construction Management course.
I would eventually like to be a lecturer. I know it would be a challenging career but also think it would be extremely rewarding.
