Travel and Tourism students go Viva España

June 12, 2019 - Claire Todd

As part of our ‘H.E.A.T up your Future’ blog series, we invited Claire Todd, our Marketing Intern, to interview HND Travel and Tourism students who organised a Spanish themed event called ‘Viva España’ at our training restaurant Westerly in the College’s Ayr Campus.

Claire spoke to Travel and Tourism student, Scott Todd, who tells us all about the event.

Why a Spanish theme?

Summer is almost here, and we wanted to plan an event to get people in the mood - what better way to do that than with a Spanish event?

We wanted to showcase Westerly restaurant, and hold a successful event which would sell out and that’s exactly what we did.

We anticipated a nice summery evening to fit with the theme, but it actually ended up being one of the rainiest days of the year so far!

Food orders were then taken which ran really smoothly and professionally. Tapas options included: chicken & chorizo paella, calamari, patatas bravas, a Spanish omelette, marinated chicken wings in paprika and lemon and spicy lamb.

The staff were very attentive during the whole meal and were always offering us more drinks and asking if we were enjoying the food.

The restaurant was beautifully set up with bunting and balloons as well as place mats for each table with a different Spanish destination.

The Cocktail Masterclass

An HNC Events student was the mixologist for the evening. He had a great passion when creating and speaking about the cocktails and you could tell he enjoyed being behind a bar.

The first cocktail demonstrated was a classic cocktail with a Spanish twist with the use of Tanqeuray Sevilla which has essences of Sevilla oranges and other fine botanicals.

Feedback

We asked for feedback from our guests at the end of the night and it was generally positive. Most people agreed that it was excellent value for money and that they would’ve paid more for a similar event. Most would also definitely be interested in similar events held at The Westerly restaurant.”

If you’re interested in attending more events within Ayrshire College, keep an eye on the website and social media, as well as around campus.
