We live in a digital age where the demand for ICT and digital technology is growing at an incredible pace. With good computing and IT systems now central to every business, organisations are set to become even more driven by technology and data.

In this dynamic and continually evolving sector, there’s already a skills shortage and it’s predicted there could be as many as 11,000 job opportunities each year in Scotland alone. So by investing in digital and IT skills now, you could find yourself highly sought after in the future!

The wide range of careers includes web development, technical support, software engineering, cyber security, data analytics, games development, telecommunications and many more.

If you’re interested in a career in computing, this course can help you on your way.

For entry to this course you’ll need:

  • A real interest in computing.
  • Four National 5s (including Computing Science or Maths) OR an NQ at Level 5 in a computing related area.
  • An interview with us.

If you don’t have formal qualifications, but have life experience, then we’ll also consider you for a place, so please call us for a chat.

What's Involved

This course will develop your skills in hardware, software and applications, as well as introduce you to new areas such as servers and animation. It also includes a National Progression Award in Software Development.

You’ll extend your knowledge in the functional elements and structure in a computer system. You’ll learn to install and configure an operating system, along with additional components.

You’ll learn advanced concepts in software development and computer architecture such as code, constructs and algorithms. You’ll also design, create and develop your own applications.

You’ll look at the role of servers and how they support users and computer management. You’ll learn about installations, server storage solutions, performance and maintenance.

You’ll learn how to plan, design and develop a small website. You’ll develop skills in HTML and CSS, and learn how to use web authoring tools.

You’ll explore the techniques and concepts involved in producing 2D animation using software. You’ll develop skills in drawing, painting and text tools, and learn how to achieve motion. You’ll then plan, produce and package your own short computer animation sequence.

You’ll take your word processing skills to a complex level, learning how to use web applications to create, share and collaborate on documents.

You’ll also have the chance to develop your personal and employability skills through taking part in an Enterprise Activity, such as a pop-up IT class for members of the public.

You’ll develop basic skills in cyber security and be encouraged to improve your cyber hygiene and resilience. You will learn to identify security vulnerabilities safely, legally and ethically.

Go Anywhere

When you successfully complete this course, you’ll have the choice of:

  • Moving onto HNC Computing with options to study either Computing Science or Technical Support & Networking.
  • Seeking to start your career with a Modern Apprenticeship in the area of technical support.
