If you’re interested in a career in fashion, but not sure what your options are, this course could be your answer. It gives you the opportunity to develop your knowledge and skills across a wide range of areas for a future career in the dynamic and fast moving world of fashion.

For entry to this course, ideally you’ll have:

  • Level 6 Fashion for Manufacture or another relevant NC course at SCQF Level 6 or equivalent.

We’ll also consider you if you have all of the following:

  • A real interest in fashion and current trends
  • A high level of sewing skills
  • A good eye for design
  • Highers in English and Art

OR

  • If you don’t have formal qualifications, appropriate experience or other training.

All applicants will need to have an interview with us and bring a portfolio of work, which will include fashion designs and preferably examples of garments made to demonstrate sewing skills.

What's Involved

Here’s just some of what you’ll be doing:

  • You’ll explore fashion forecasting, learning how to research and develop information using WGSN - the world trend authority - to forecast future trends in colour palettes, fabrics and garments.
  • You’ll develop skills in fashion illustration, learning how to produce stylised fashion figures and use different media to create colour garment ideas.
  • You’ll look at commercial fashion design for a retail outlet. You’ll choose a middle market fashion brand and create your own collection for them.
  • You’ll expand on your skills in pattern construction, producing a range of block patterns and developing them into finished production patterns.
  • You’ll develop your sewing skills, focusing specifically on decorative trimmings and finishing techniques.
  • You’ll look at fashion merchandising and the techniques retailers use to respond to the external environment, such as trends and seasons.
  • You’ll develop skills in visual merchandising, looking at different techniques to create an effective display and devising your own plan for a retail environment.

You’ll also have the chance to:

  • Use your design, pattern and manufacturing skills to produce a minimum of one creation for the End of Year Fashion Show.
  • Take part in competitions with external partners – previously this has included designing jewellery for local retailer Cherry Soda and creating a tartan throw for WestPoint Homes.
  • Go fabric shopping in Glasgow to find what you need for your next creation.
  • See the production process first hand with a factory visit.
  • Hear top tips from industry speakers on how to get ahead in the highly competitive fashion world.
  • Be inspired by a visit to the Glasgow School of Art Fashion Show.

Go Anywhere

When you successfully complete this course, you’ll have the choice of:

  • Moving onto HND Fashion Design and Production with Retail
  • Exploring your future career options including: Stylist, Buyer, Designer, Pattern Cutter, Garment Technologist, Import or Retail Merchandiser, Visual Merchandiser, Marketing Assistant, Retail Assistant/Manager.

With additional qualifications, you may be able to progress to a degree programme within fashion or retail, such as International Fashion Branding or International Fashion Business at Glasgow Caledonian University (possibly via our articulation arrangements), or fashion courses at e.g. Glasgow School or Art, Edinburgh School of Art, Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen or London College of Fashion.
