This course is a mixture of technical skills and theory to help prepare you for a career in the fast moving media industry.

For entry to this course you’ll need:

  • A real interest in the media
  • Two Highers including English OR a relevant NC course at SCQF Level 6 or equivalent, such as Film and Broadcasting or Media.
  • An interview with us
  • A sample of your written work, such as a film review

If you don’t have formal qualifications, but have appropriate experience or training, then we’ll also consider you for a place, so please call us for a chat.

What's Involved

In this course you’ll work to high standards and deadlines, often within a team, to help get you ready to make it in the media.

Here’s just some of what you’ll be doing:

  • You’ll look at film theory, including key concepts, film language and critical analysis.
  • You’ll also look at how film theories relate to new media such as computer games, digital storytelling and interactive installations.
  • You’ll delve deeper into media analysis, including semiotics, representation and idiology within media texts.
  • You’ll look at video production, from planning and scriptwriting, to storyboards, props lists, camera operation, production and editing, and will produce your own short video programmes.
  • You’ll explore radio production, analysing different types of programmes in radio broadcasting and producing your own short radio programme.
  • You’ll develop skills in photography, looking at camera controls, techniques, composition and exposure.
  • You’ll look at the basics of animation before moving onto 3D computer animation, using MAYA software to create your own 3D sequence.
  • You’ll develop skills in producing scripts and storyboards for non-factual TV programmes, working to a brief to create your own script.

And like all our media students, you’ll have the chance to:

  • Take part in live projects. Examples include a Health & Safety video for Morrison Construction, and an ad campaign for Police Scotland.
  • Be involved in the Annual End of Year Show which features work from all creative departments.
  • Take part in our informal Short Film Awards Ceremony where we screen the best short films from the year.
  • Hear top tips on how to get started in a media career from leading employers such as the BBC, STV and advertising agencies.

Go Anywhere

When you successfully complete this course, you’ll have the choice of:

  • Moving onto a degree programme, such as Broadcast Production or Filmmaking and Screenwriting at UWS, or media courses at e.g. Glasgow, Glasgow Caledonian, Stirling, Queen Margaret or Edinburgh Napier Universities.
  • Starting your career with an apprenticeship in a media organisation, such as the BBC.
  • Exploring your future career options including: Writer, Researcher, Runner, Editorial Assistant, TV/Radio/Film Producer, Video Content Producer.
