What's Involved

This course gives you a good introductory experience in sport and fitness, to prepare you for higher level courses. You’ll spend most of your time in our fitness suites and sports facilities, both indoor and outdoor. You’ll also have a small amount of time in the classroom for theory and essential skills.

Here’s just some of what you’ll be doing:

  • Leading Sporting Activities - you’ll develop skills required to successfully motivate and lead participants so they enjoy a challenging, sporting experience.
  • Basketball - you’ll develop skills in the invasive game of basketball, working on teamwork and tactics, while learning key coaching methods.
  • Badminton - you’ll develop key skills in badminton, working on techniques and tactics to break your opponent down, while learning key coaching methods.
  • Circuit Training - you’ll design and take part in your own circuit training programme. Can you challenge your classmates to finish your circuit?
  • Resistance Training - you’ll look at how to safely lift weights within the gym environment.
  • Preparing to work with people with special needs - you’ll look at specific ways in which sport practitioners can successfully deliver to those with special needs, ensuring they reap the benefits of sport and exercise participation.
  • Fitness industry - you’ll look at the fitness industry overall and the range of activities and employment opportunities it offers.

You’ll also have the chance to provide support to the local community through sport and fitness activities, working alongside other college class groups. This can sometimes lead to more opportunities to get involved in the industry.
