Your course will incorporate units at SCQF Level 6 and 7 in order to ensure a smooth progression towards higher level sport and fitness units/qualifications.

If you’re into sport and fitness and are thinking about a future career in the sport, fitness or exercise industry, this course can help you on your way.

For entry to this course you’ll need:

  • A real interest in sport and fitness
  • National 5 qualifications and 1 Higher (A-C) or equivalent OR a pass in a relevant NC course at SCQF Level 5/6
  • An interview with us*
  • To become a member of the PVG scheme

If you don’t have formal qualifications, but have life experience, then we’ll also consider you for a place, so please call us for a chat.

*If you submit a detailed application and meet the minimum entry qualifications, you may be offered a place without the need for an interview.

If you don’t have the minimum entry qualifications, you may wish to consider a lower level course such as NC Sport and Fitness.

      What's Involved

This course extends the skills and knowledge gained at Level 5/6, but is also suitable for direct entry. It incorporates an NPA in Exercise and Fitness Leadership.

You’ll spend some time in our fitness suites and sports facilities. However, there are also important theory and written elements, you’ll also be in the classroom a lot, as well as self-study.

Motivation and participation is essential. You’ll work alongside your peers, gaining confidence and developing leadership skills. You’ll be encouraged to extend your work and volunteering outwith college, to maximise your chances of networking and employment.

Here’s just some of what you’ll be doing:

      • Planning and Delivery of Sport and Exercise Specific Coaching Sessions - you’ll develop your coaching skills in your own sport (eg football, futsal, volleyball or mixed martial arts).
      • Work Placement - you’ll carry out a placement in your local community, making you more employable and successful.
      • Free Weight Training - through practical sessions, you’ll learn the importance of "not missing leg day".
      • Human Physiology in Performance and Performance Physiology - you can only train that body successfully if you know how it works, so let’s find out!
      • Planning Personal Fitness - you’ll create a plan to improve your own level of fitness. How tough will you be on yourself?
      • Cardiovascular Training - it’s the long, hard training no one likes. But it will burn the calories and make you an aerobic beast, so it’s worth it!
      • Sports Coaching Theory and Practice - how can you create your own style of leadership? This is the start of HNC level work, so it’s time to prove you’re ready for the next stage.
      • Nutrition for Fitness Health and Exercise – you’ll gain a real understanding of how to fuel the most powerful of machines - your body.

      Go Anywhere

When you successfully complete this course, you’ll have the choice of:

      • Moving onto an HNC/D course such as HNC Coaching and Developing Sport, HNC Fitness, Health and Exercise or HND Applied Sports and Exercise Science (Year 1)
      • Exploring your future career options such as Active Schools opportunities, Sports Coach opportunities or Leisure Centre roles.

With additional qualifications at HNC/D Level (Level 7/8), other career options will become possible.
