The automotive industry is massive and keeps the country moving on a daily basis - from cars and public transport, to couriers, HGVs and emergency vehicles. Plus, let’s not forget the fun side too -motor sports!

Our motor vehicle courses are delivered through the internationally recognised IMI (Institute of the Motor Industry) to give you the skills you need for a great career. You’ll have the added benefit of learning in our superb garage facilities which reflect industry standards, including the latest diagnostic equipment. You’ll also be taught by experienced industry professionals, who keep their skills and knowledge of modern technologies fully up to date through our Continuous Professional Development programme.

If you’re thinking about a career in the motor industry, then this course can help get you on your way.

For entry to this course you’ll need:

  • A real interest in the motor industry

  • Three National 3s or equivalent OR

a relevant NC course at SCQF Level 3 or equivalent, such as Introduction to Motor Vehicle with Hybrid Vehicle Technology or any form of engineering

  • An interview with us

If you don’t have any formal qualifications, but have life experience, then we’ll also consider you for a place, so please call us for a chat.

What's Involved

This course is a mixture of developing practical skills in the garage workshop and learning the theory you’ll need to work successfully in the motor industry.

We'll develop your skills for employment, such as working as part of a team and creating a CV to get you noticed.

You’ll cover all vehicle-related systems, including engines, emissions, exhausts, electrical, brakes, fuel, starting, steering and suspension. Be prepared to get your hands dirty as you remove wheels, fit components and perform routine maintenance on vehicles.

You’ll look at the effects of vehicles on the environment, including low carbon technologies and electric vehicles.

You’ll learn about workshop safety and maintenance, vehicle construction, moving loads and vehicle lifting, and exterior valeting.

You’ll explore the retail motor industry, as well as the vehicle repair trade.

If you’ve worked hard throughout the session and shown us you’re serious about gaining motor vehicle skills, you’ll also have the chance to go on two weeks work experience with a local garage.

Go Anywhere

When you successfully complete this course, you’ll have the choice of:

  • Moving on to a relevant SCQF Level 5 course such as IMI Level 2 Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair
  • Seeking to start your career with a Modern Apprenticeship in a garage
  • Using your transferable skills to move to another related industry, such as a Level 5 course in aeronautical or other form of engineering
