If you’ve got a real desire for a management role in the fast moving, dynamic hospitality industry, then this course could set you up for a fantastic career.
For entry to this course, you’ll need to have:
- an HNC Hospitality
- a successful interview with us
It’s also really valuable if you can gain experience of working in the industry while you’re on this course.
A key part of this course is management of food and beverage operations, so you’ll take part in live events. Working in a team, you’ll plan, organise, deliver and evaluate an event. You’ll come up with the idea or theme - e.g. a Burns Supper, Chinese New Year Celebration, Valentine’s Dinner or a charity event - and then get to work! From big tasks to tiny details, you’ll do the lot - publicity, licence application, menus, food order, table decorations and more.
Other skills you’ll learn (and practice when you’re planning for and reporting on your event) include:
- Team management
- Business finance & management
- Accommodation management
- Developing & delivering staff training
You’ll also have the chance to:
- Participate in real functions such as business events or bespoke dinners.
- Visit distilleries or hotels such as Trump Turnberry, Lochgreen House in Troon or the Hilton Glasgow.
- Join in Masterclasses from local industry professionals.
- Hear top tips on how to get ahead in hospitality from leading employers, successful venue owners and industry suppliers.
- Take part in competitions such as inter-campus competitions or the national Student Team Challenge.

When you successfully complete this course, you’ll have the choice of continuing your studies or seeking to start your career.
You could go on to study a Hospitality Management, Business Management or Tourism degree, usually entering at 3rd year.
Potential careers include:
- Setting up and running your own business
- Manager or Trainee Manager of a hotel, restaurant, pub or club
- Manager or Trainee Manager in any food and beverage service
- Accommodation provider manager

Hospitality and Tourism
Scotland has a rich larder of food, producing quality, premium and healthy produce, and with many international brands, it can be an exciting industry to work in. The food and drink industry is a major contributor to Scotland's economy with one in five people in manufacturing working in the sector. As well as the economy, food impacts on many other aspects of Scottish life including our health and environment.
Our Hospitality courses will provide you with practical experience in the College’s kitchens, training restaurant, internet café and licensed bar. Ayrshire College has superb links with industry and almost all students gain work experience while they are studying, giving them an opportunity to showcase their talents to employers. Career opportunities include Chefs, Housekeepers, Bar Staff, Restaurant Staff, Receptionists and Managers.
There is a wide variety of roles and if you have a good work ethic and a desire to provide excellent customer service then working in this industry could be for you. The opportunities are endless and include working with tiny specialist companies, being part of a major drinks business or learning from the masters in the top kitchens.
Travel and Tourism
Scotland’s travel and tourism industry is growing! Nowadays Scotland welcomes tourists and travellers from all corners of the globe and tourism is a vital component of Scotland’s economy worth around £11bn annually according to recent reports.

The most important qualities working in the tourism industry are communication, teamwork and customer service skills. Whatever the location, position or technical skills, to make it in travel and tourism you need to enjoy challenges and have the ability to work well with people.
Studying travel and tourism provides access to a wide variety of jobs within Visitor Attractions, Event & Conference Organisations, Travel Consultants, VisitScotland, Local Authority Tourism Teams, Travel Agents, various roles in Hospitality or in outbound tourism such as Cabin Crew, Airport Ground Staff and Holiday Reps. A global industry with employment opportunities in the UK as well as offering many possibilities for travel and employment globally.
