What is the Course About

It comprises four HN units:

Writing for Media

This unit has three outcomes. The first is analysing pieces of journalism and professional scripts. The other two involve the student in scriptwriting and journalism.

Media Analysis: Advertisements

This unit involves the study and analysis of print, radio and television adverts and looks at how these adverts communicate ideas and values to audiences.

 Film Theory

This unit provides students with background knowledge of film theory and will help students analyse films, and place them in an historical and contemporary context. Students will learn to identify key concepts in film theory and apply key terms in film analysis.

The assessments for the Film Theory unit are:

1. A podcast describing key film theory terms

2. An essay applying these key terms in the analysis of a film.

Narrative in Fiction & Film

In this unit, students will study narrative techniques in a literary work of fiction and look at how these techniques differ when use in the medium of film. Previous classes have studied popular stories, often adapted for film such as ‘Dracula’ and ‘I am Legend’

The assessments for the narrative unit are: 

1. An essay analysing narrative techniques in a literary work of fiction

2. An essay analysing narrative techniques in the film adaptation of the literary work

3. An essay comparing narrative techniques in the different media

What do I Need

Preferred entry requirements - Higher English or Communication at level 6.

How will I be Assessed

The assessments for the Writing unit are:
1. Analysis of a piece of copy
2. Analysis of a broadcast script
3. A piece of journalistic writing
4. A short script

The assessments for the Advertising unit are:
1. Analysis of a print ad
2. Analysis of a TV ad
3. Analysis of a radio ad
The assessments for the Film Theory unit are:

1. A podcast describing key film theory terms
2. An essay applying these key terms in the analysis of a film.

The assessments for the Narrative unit are:
1. An essay analysing narrative techniques in a literary work of fiction
2. An essay analysing narrative techniques in the film adaptation of the literary work
3. An essay comparing narrative techniques in the different media

Next Steps

These units are delivered on our HNC Media Analysis & Production programme and it might be that some pupils would like to return the following year to complete the HNC with us.
