If you’d like to work in a hotel or restaurant, then this course is a great place to start!

For entry you’ll need:

  • Some experience or knowledge of the industry. This can be informal, rather than proper work experience - for example you might have cooking skills learned at home.
  • A real interest in working in the hospitality industry.
  • Core skills at Level 3.
  • An interview with us.

What's Involved

First of all, you’ll learn to prepare a whole range of food for professional cookery in our industrial kitchens. You’ll be preparing starters, main courses and mouthwatering desserts, so you’ll handle everything from fruit and veg, to meat and fish. You’ll even get to try your hand at baking.

Next you’ll learn to serve - real food to real customers in our fabulous Salt & Barrel restaurant in the Kilmarnock Campus. Here, every week you’ll get real life experience of waiting at tables - explaining to customers about the dishes available, taking orders and serving.

You’ll find out what you need to know to successfully work in the hospitality industry, including learning about food and drink products, food hygiene and safety. We’ll also help you develop your skills for employment, such as working as part of a team.

You’ll build transferable Essential Skills in meaningful contexts to help you become more effective in life, learning, and work. This could be communication, numeracy, ICT, working with others, and problem solving.

And like all our hospitality courses, you’ll have the chance to:

  • Participate in real functions, such as business events or bespoke dinners.
  • Go on visits to hotels, restaurants, pubs or clubs.
  • Join in Masterclasses from local industry professionals.
  • Hear top tips on how to get ahead in hospitality from leading employers, successful venue owners and industry suppliers.
  • Take part in competitions to put your new skills to the test - with prizes of course!
