For entry to this course you’ll need:

  • A real interest in working in business or accounting
  • Four National 5s, ideally including English or Maths OR a relevant NQ qualification at Level 5

What's Involved

You’ll begin by looking at large business organisations, including those operating globally. You’ll explore different business sectors, business objectives and what can impact on the success of a business. You will also learn about economic activity and the UK government’s economic policies.

You’ll look at what’s involved in the successful management of marketing and operations, including market research, stock management control, quality control and production methods.

You’ll learn how to manage people and finance effectively and develop your IT skills and knowledge of applications, including word processing, spreadsheets and databases, using complex functions.

You’ll also explore Scots Law, including the difference between criminal and civil law, and how the courts system operates.

On the accounting side, you’ll look at basic book keeping and learn to use commercial software for accounting purposes, such as creating records for income and expenses, processing transactions or producing management reports.

You’ll learn the basics of management accounting, such as controlling costs, break-even analysis and preparing budgets. You’ll also look at financial accounting and producing financial statements, including profit and loss accounts.

You’ll develop skills to handle wages and salaries, including calculating tax and national insurance deductions, and preparing payroll records.

Finally, you’ll have the chance to:

  • Visit a Sheriff Court as part of your studies in Scots Law
  • Meet local business employers who’ll give you their top tips for successful interviews, tell you the skills they look for when recruiting new employees and explain what it’s really like starting up a new business
  • Take part in enterprising activities, such as raising funds for charity and good causes
  • Go Anywhere

When you successfully complete this course, you’ll have the choice of:

Moving onto a Level 7 course such as HNC Business, HNC Accounting or HNC Administration and IT
