Short Full time, 18 weeks
From 21 Jan 2019
This is an 18 week January start course at SCQF 4. For entry to this course, you don’t need any formal qualifications or experience. The course is suitable for a wide range of learners including school leavers, adult returners to education or learners with previous Construction employment experience who wish to enhance their career prospects. What you must have is a real interest in construction. You’ll also need to come in for interview.
This is a practical course which gives you a great introduction to working in construction together with introducing you to skill of bricklaying. The focus will be on learning different skills needed to work on a construction site, such as measurement techniques, working with hand and power tools, mixing mortar and concrete, learning about different types of building materials, how to work safely at height and health and safety considerations when working in a construction environment. In bricklaying you will learn different types of brickwork bonds – how to lay bricks to give strength or a specific decorative effect. You might also have the chance to put your new skills into action, with a real craft project. This could be in the local community, or it might be a project you carry out in college - whatever the project, we’ll make sure employers get to see your project and the new skills you’ve got.
You will also get to visit a live construction site to see all the skills you’ve learned being used in the day to day operations of the site and speak with tradespeople and Construction professionals to hear about their roles.
