Early year’s provision has changed significantly over the years. Scottish Government’s expansion plans require leadership at all levels to influence good practice and improve quality in early learning and childcare services. Today effective early learning and childcare experiences are recognised as playing a key role in future life chances and achievement.

For entry to this course you’ll need:

  • Currently hold an early years practitioners qualification prior to 2016 as required by SSSC e.g. HNC early education and childcare.
  • Or currently working within early learning and childcare including registered childminding.
  • A satisfactory work reference
  • Eligible to be a member of the PVG scheme

What's involved

This course will offer those individuals interested in updating their CPD with two units from the current HNC Childhood Practice award, to extend professional skills and knowledge in early learning and childcare. This CPD will give learners the opportunity to understand and apply leadership at all levels.

Here’s just some of what you’ll be doing:

  • You’ll investigate and demonstrate an understanding of the skills inherent in effective leadership and recognise that it is about what we do and how we engage and communicate with and towards other people. It aims to help develop understanding of the importance of shared purpose and collaborative working.
  • You’ll engage in personal reflection for continued improvements and identifies the requirements for reflecting on and enhance and develop practice in your workplace.

When you successfully complete this course, you’ll have the choice of:

  • Progress to complete the full HNC Childhood Practice award. (SCQF level 7)
  • Where appropriate progress to PDA Childhood Practice ( SCQF level 8)
  • Meet the post-registration CPD requirements of the SSSC for early learning and childcare workforce.



This course is eligible for Individual Training Account (ITA) and Fee Waiver, depending on individual circumstances.

However, Skills Development Scotland have now closed ITA to new applicants and it is anticipated it will reopen in April 2019.
