Ayrshire Business student wins unique memorial award
NC Business and Administration student, Sandra McInnes, from Kilbirnie, has been presented with the Jean Parker-Brown Memorial Fund award this year from Foundation Scotland.
Jean Parker-Brown emigrated to New York in 1968 with her family. She was a full-time homemaker but decided to continue her education, and at the age of 40, earned a diploma from business school before working in the banking industry.
Jean never lost her love for her native Scotland and especially her hometown of Dalry. Her family established The Jean Parker-Brown Memorial Fund in honour of her memory.
The fund is primarily designed to provide financial support to mature women from Ayrshire, and in particular from the Dalry area, who wish to further their education, just as Jean did.
About winning the award, Sandra said “Before I came to college, I hadn’t worked for eight years, as my son was born with multiple disabilities so being a full-time mum and carer was my priority.
“I am very proud of how far I have come in the last year and it’s all down to the support of my family and the college.
"The course has been brilliant and I wish I had done it years ago. I’ve discovered I have a real interest in accounting, although the course has been a great overview of business and administration overall.
“I’m absolutely delighted to have won this award. The fund is a real boost and will help me to further my studies. I’m starting the HNC Administration and IT course in August, and am planning to move on to the HND next year."
”Business Lecturer Stephanie Criaud said “Sandra gives 100% in all that she does, and this is evident in her coursework. She is a highly respected student in her class and is very well deserving of this award.”
Annabel Bath from Foundation Scotland added “The fund can make a huge difference to an individual, allowing them to pursue opportunities that may not have been possible. We are delighted to support Sandra and we wish her well in her studies and future career.”
