Ayrshire College tackles gender imbalance
As part of Ayrshire College’s ambition to tackle gender imbalance, the College is launching a new path that aims to inspire men into typically female dominated industries.
With that in mind, the College is offering a taster for those individuals interested in a career in early learning and childcare to develop knowledge, practical skills and qualities for working with children and young people.
Designed for men who want a taster before committing to a qualification, the Men into Early Years career changer taster programme, is part of the College’s ongoing Early Years campaign to ‘Build a brighter future’, supporting the Scottish Government’s 2020 campaign, promoting a substantial increase in job opportunities in the sector.
Students who are training to work in Early Education, tell us why they have chosen this career path.
Early Years student Scott Thomson, from Irvine said, “the course is a progression for me, so this is only the start. I’d like to go on to university, and my goal is to become a Primary School Teacher. I would say give it a go. It’s not a matter of because you are male, you shouldn’t work in early years, it’s about the opportunities available to all, and there are so many opportunities!”
David Hardie, Early Years Practitioner at Dundonald Nursery, said about his experience “There’s no average day working in Early Years, every day is different! We try to allow things to be child-led, letting them choose what they’d like to do. We have our outdoor policy, where the door is always open. I’d say more than half of the children want to be outside at any one time. We are out in all weathers and the children really enjoy it.
"As far as jobs go, it’s a lot of fun. Spending time with the children is brilliant. One of the more rewarding aspects of the job, is getting to see the progression that they are making.”
Ayrshire College recognises that it can be daunting to take the plunge into a new career – especially if you’re not entirely sure what to expect. But if you’re looking for something that’s rewarding, good fun, and has the potential to change lives, then Early Years could be a great career move for you.
