Ayrshire College hosts big data digital conference

Over 150 people from the private, public and education sectors took part in the second Ayrshire Bytes: #DoingDataTogether conference at Ayrshire College’s Kilmarnock Campus on Friday 15 March.

As part of the festival of Data Innovation in Scotland, Ayrshire Bytes is an official fringe event of #DataFest2019. The conference brings together employers, students, staff and data experts to explore how big data is changing business, and realising the potential of digital in Ayrshire and the West of Scotland.

This year the focus was on collaboration, and on #DoingDataTogether. The conference offered a range of perspectives on data innovation and best practice, with guest speakers from a number of industries presenting on how they have embraced digital technology.

Key Speaker Gillian Docherty, Chief Executive of The Data Lab said “With the rapid advancement of data technology, it’s so important to invest in upskilling and that’s where the college comes in. There’s a pipeline of talent here, and it’s so important to continue to work in partnership in order to future proof digital potential”

Moira Birtwistle, Director of Skills, Business, Admin, IT, Sport, Fitness and Social Science – “Our ambition for Ayrshire is to enable its people, businesses and communities to have the skills to take advantage of the potential of digital technologies.

“Central to that are students on digital and computing courses at the College. Their skills will be vital to enabling companies in every sector of the economy to benefit from developments in data.”

The event was a tremendous opportunity for students to network with employers and learn more about how data will change businesses. For staff members, it was an excellent opportunity for them to link with organisations and for employers, to learn practical techniques that they could take back and use in their own organisations, through thought-provoking best practice sharing.
