Students promote ‘No barriers to sport’ at Ayrshire College

Ayrshire College’s ‘No Barriers to Sport’ event was a huge success with over 60 pupils from Hillhead Primary School enjoying different activities to raise awareness of gender inequality in sport.

Access to Primary Education and Humanities (SWAP) students organised the event in partnership with the Fair Play Foundation at the Kilmarnock Campus this week. Activities included Dancing, Football, Skipping, Hula Hooping and educational poster making.

The students were passionate about raising awareness of gender inequality in sport, and to break down any barriers of taking part in sport for the school children.

Student Leeane To said “the whole class was involved in organising the event, which was a really great experience. We wanted to try and change attitudes towards gender inequality in sports and get the children involved in all the sports on offer. It was a really fun filled morning and the pupils had a ball!”

Sports Lecturer David Dougan said “the main purpose of this sporting event is to raise awareness of inequalities in sport and society as a whole. The students have planned a fantastic event and the hope is that the children had fun and were also educated on the day that any gender can take part in any sport.”

Mark Reid from the Fair Play Foundation said “the students have demonstrated throughout the planning phase a passion, dedication and genuine desire to raise the issue of gender prejudice in sport and wider society. It has been an enjoyable and thought-provoking day that has promoted tolerance, respect and inclusion.”
