Ayrshire College enjoys the sweet taste of success

Ayrshire College has been awarded the coveted EatSafe award for food safety by East Ayrshire Council.

Of twelve awards given throughout East Ayrshire, three have been awarded to the College’s new Kilmarnock Campus. The Still Room coffee shop, The Refectory, and the Salt and Barrel training restaurant all received recognition as having excellent food hygiene.

The award itself was presented by East Ayrshire Council and the scheme is run in conjunction with the Food Standards Agency. The Eat Safe Award sits in parallel with the Food Hygiene Information Scheme which rates hygiene standards against legal requirements. 

The awards are only allocated when a business has achieved consistently high food hygiene and training standards beyond those required by law. For customers, it provides a recognisable sign of excellence in standards of food hygiene.

Mark Hunter, Catering Services Manager at Ayrshire College said “This award is testament to the dedication and hard work by the Hospitality and Catering Staff to maintain the highest standards possible in food safety within our food outlets at the College.”

Councillor Tom Cook, Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Equalities, said “Within East Ayrshire, the Eat Safe Award scheme from Food Standards Scotland is going from strength to strength. 

“Ayrshire College caters daily for thousands of students and teachers who moved into their incredible new premises last October. The two main eating establishments within the College received the prestigious award and I was particularly pleased that the training restaurant received the same accolade. Young people are learning to cook and the importance of excellent hygiene standards."
