Ayrshire College recognised as leading UK training partner

Ayrshire College has been nominated at the Semta Skills Awards 2017 in the Training Provider of the Year award category.

Semta – The Science, Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies Alliance - is a not-for-profit organisation led by employers to improve the UK’s engineering skills.

Ayrshire College is the only Scottish college or university nominated for an award.

The College has been recognised as one of the UK’s leading training providers after a successful year for its aeronautical engineering apprenticeship programme.

Ayrshire College achieved a 95% success rate in aerospace modern apprenticeships for the last year. In total, 39 people were recruited directly from Ayrshire College courses into high value, high productivity careers in the aerospace industry.

A strong partnership approach between the College and aeronautical employers has led to increased opportunities for young people.

Modern apprenticeship recruitment in the aerospace sector increased by 50% in 2016-17, compared to the previous year.

Eleven students from Ayrshire College’s HNC Aeronautical Engineering course secured apprenticeships with Prestwick Aircraft Maintenance Ltd (PAML), while four other students from the College were hired as Trainee Mechanics.

The College has also achieved great success in other engineering sectors.

Ayrshire College and the renewable energy firm, Gamesa Energy UK, confirmed a partnership last year that saw the company offer employment opportunities to college graduates. Gamesa also supported a new transitional training scheme for wind turbine technicians in the region at the College.

Ayrshire College is nominated alongside ‘Skills Training UK’ and ‘Warwickshire College Group - Trident Centre’ in the Training Provider of the Year category. The award ceremony takes place in London on Wednesday 8 March 2017.

Stuart Millar, Director of Education Contracts & Business Development at Ayrshire College said “Aerospace and engineering is a hugely important sector for Ayrshire’s economy and communities. To be shortlisted as one of the top three training partners in the UK is a fabulous accolade for Ayrshire College and recognises the hard work of our staff and students. It is a clear indication that our local workforce is highly skilled and Ayrshire is the best place for aerospace and engineering companies to do business.”
