Ayrshire College student chefs triumph at ScotHot

An all-female team from Ayrshire College has been victorious in the prestigious Country Range Student Chef Challenge, scooping the coveted top award and gold medal.

The talented trio competed against seven other teams at the live final which took place this week at ScotHot 2017, Scotland’s biggest food, drink and hospitality show at the SECC in Glasgow.

The Irvine-based Professional Cookery student team, Iona Duncan from Irvine, Agnieszka Dudko from Ardrossan and Katarzyna Hospodarewska of Saltcoats, under the guidance of their chef lecturer Annemarie Farr, are the first Ayrshire College students to win the prestigious competition.

The team cooked a three course, fine dining menu, providing the students with the chance to showcase their culinary skills and creativity.

The winning Irvine team will receive the once in a lifetime opportunity to work with the Craft Guild of Chefs Culinary Team to cater for over 1000 guests at the Craft Guild’s Annual Awards 2017, in London. As well as this prize, they will be treated to a night in a 5-star hotel and dinner at a Michelin star restaurant.

Agnieszka said “We are over the moon to win this prestigious award. Working all those extra hours to perfect the menu was really worth it. I’m looking forward to moving on to the next level in professional cookery.”

As well as winning the Student Chef Challenge, another three medals were brought home to Ayrshire College by David Welsh and Clare Gordon who won silver, and Chloe White winning bronze for Bakery Skills.

Their mentor, hospitality lecturer Annmarie Farr, spoke with pride at the achievements of all of the students. “I would say as a lecturer this has been my proudest moment. The students did really well on the day, with impeccable timing, outstanding demonstration of skills and attention to detail on the presentation. For the professional cookery team to win is fantastic for their future careers, and the prize of cooking the Craft Guild of Chefs’ dinner in London will be an experience they will cherish.

I’m also delighted for the bakery students, it’s a huge achievement in a highly competitive field. The students are an inspiration, as it shows what can be accomplished when you work hard and push yourself out of your comfort zone. This recognition certainly puts Ayrshire College hospitality on the map!”
