Ayrshire College students have an outdoor learning experience

Early Education and Childcare students from Ayrshire College were given a memorable lesson by an outdoor learning specialist.

Rainbows and Puddles is a unique childcare facility for nursery and primary age children in Ayrshire and Glasgow. The nursery is run entirely outside in a natural environment.

The students from the College’s Kilwinning Campus recently donned their wellies and visited Craufurdland Estate in Fenwick, where they got to observe both adult led play in the form of a dinosaur egg hunt and child led free play.

The college students were keen to get involved in the activities as much as possible, taking part in den building and fire lighting.

Afterwards the group were invited to take part in a question and answer session with the nursery staff.

The visit took place as part of the students’ Essential Skills Communications and Problem Solving units of their course.

One student commented “That was the first time I have ever lit a campfire, I have learned how that kind of thing would benefit the kids in my current placement.”

Another said “The visit provided a great insight into what outdoor learning actually entails.”

Ceri Nailen, said “During their core skills classes the students have been researching natural play and the benefits of outdoor learning for children. The visit to Rainbows and Puddles enabled them to gain hands on experience of natural play in action.

“In addition I hope that the visit has challenged the students thinking about what an appropriate environment for learning is.”
