Ayrshire Schools celebrate DYW Projects success

Ayrshire College attended the Princes Trust Ayrshire Enterprise Awards 2017 on Monday 9th October at Saltcoats Town Hall.

Part of the award ceremony focused on the success of Ayrshire schools that have implemented Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) projects over the last year.

DYW projects are designed for young people to gain employability skills as they prepare for the next stage of their life beyond school. These projects are made possible by a partnership between Princes Trust, DYW Ayrshire, the local authority, Ayrshire College and the school.

Cheryl Smith, Beauty lecturer involved in delivering the DYW projects in schools, currently works in partnership with Prestwick Academy teachers to deliver the course for the pupils running the school nail bar.

Prestwick Academy was one of the schools recognised at the awards for the success of their nail bar and bike maintenance class.

Cheryl commented on the impact the project has had “Starting the nail bar has given the pupils a feel for what it is like working in a business. They wear a uniform, they are expected to arrive on time, and get set up, and remain professional throughout the session. I have seen a huge change in their confidence and skills since the beginning of the course. It’s great to see them choosing to move on to positive options and making a great start to their future careers."
