College ICT team up for top award
Ayrshire College has been shortlisted at a major UK-wide awards ceremony for its innovative and sector leading approach to IT.
The College’s ICT team is a finalist at the British Computing Science UK IT Industry Awards, taking place on Wednesday 15 November at Battersea Park Events Arena, London.
Ayrshire College will be up against tough competition in the ‘Best Not for Profit Project Excellence Award’ category, with nine other finalists including Edinburgh Napier University.
Two members of the College team delivered a presentation of their IT solution to a panel of judges on 22 September at West Bromwich Albion Football Club’s stadium, The Hawthorns.
The team invested in virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) and IGEL thin client technology, allowing students to access their own personalised desktops and applications from any computer at the Kilmarnock Campus.
This solution means that IT has been introduced to areas which didn’t previously have IT, such as motor vehicle workshops and beauty salons, enabling students to work where, when and how they like.
With investment from the Ayrshire College Foundation, this technology will be rolled out to the other Ayrshire College campuses over the next three years.
Allied to the objectives of Ayrshire College, the Ayrshire College Foundation provides financial support for Ayrshire-based projects that provide educational opportunities for all age groups.
Brad Johnstone, Head of ICT at Ayrshire College, said “Being shortlisted for a UK award against universities and government bodies is a testament to the vision and support of the college board, senior management and foundation. We are very proud to have received this recognition at such a prestigious event and hope that we can bring the award back to Ayrshire.”
