Education Minister pleased with Ayrshire College role in Open University programme
Scotland’s Minister for Further Education, Higher Education and Science paid a special visit to Ayrshire College’s Kilmarnock Campus this week.
Shirley-Anne Somerville MSP made the trip to learn more about the College’s participation in an innovative partnership with The Open University.
The collaboration allows students who have achieved a Higher National Diploma (HND) at the College to go on to complete a degree in Social Sciences with The Open University at the Kilmarnock Campus.
Ms Somerville met with students and representatives from The Open University and Ayrshire College to fully understand how the creative approach to learning works, and the Minister left the College impressed with what she heard.
Minister for Further and Higher Education and Science, Shirley-Anne Somerville, said “It is fair to say that the Open University has revolutionised the higher education sector in terms of accessibility and flexibility for the modern day student. It continues to lead the way with partnerships like this one with Ayrshire College, making Higher Education accessible at the heart of the community, in a college setting. This Government is firmly committed to widening access and learning opportunities for all, and it is partnerships like this, that are making it a reality.”
Colin Ross, Curriculum Manager for Social Sciences at Ayrshire College, said “Ayrshire College’s close knit partnership with the Open University gives the Ayrshire community a unique opportunity to access Higher education combined with the benefits of a college setting. With hands-on support, flexibility and an alternate route to achieving an Honours degree, we’re incredibly proud to provide this option to students.”
Susan Stewart, Director of The Open University in Scotland, said “The Open University exists to make higher education as accessible as possible and the partnership with Ayrshire College is an important part of that. By working together we are able to ensure that students have an excellent learning experience in a familiar environment, fitting their study around the other commitments in their busy lives.”
