Kilmaurs Primary School Pupils visit Ayrshire College for their Developing the Young Workforce week
Ayrshire College Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) welcomed a group of P6 and P7 pupils from Kilmaurs Primary School last week. Pupils attended the Kilmarnock Campus to take part in workshops as part of their Developing the Young Workforce week at school.
Pupils were split up into groups and took part in different workshops which focused on three different careers; an engineer, a software developer, and a childcare practitioner. They learned about the skills, knowledge and pathways required for these careers and also explored the gender stereotypes that can be barriers for both boys and girls.
Promoting gender balance is an important part of the DYW initiative. The College aims to break gender stereotypes with campaigns such as #ThisAyrshireGirlCan, #WhatIActuallyDo and #ThisManCares.
The P6 and P7 pupils were also taken on a tour of the new Kilmarnock Campus Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM), as well as the Early Years curriculum areas.
Kevin McShane, DYW Officer at Ayrshire College, commented: 'The DYW team were delighted to welcome Kilmaurs Primary to the Kilmarnock Campus during their DYW week to help them develop an understanding of what careers are potentially available to them and how they may interact with the College in the future.”
