Ayrshire Connects is a mentoring network for female STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) and construction students across the college to connect to each other, to students in other colleges and universities, to employers and women in the industry sectors they aspire to enter, and to senior pupils in secondary schools across Ayrshire.

Ayrshire Connects is currently taking part in Mission Discovery 2017! As part of this, we are talking to women in the STEM industry about how they have developed true grit and their advice for those starting out in their career. Read more on the Ayrshire College blog here.

Background to Ayrshire Connects

Women make up a very small proportion of engineering, technology and construction students in Scottish colleges and universities. Research shows that women students who are in male dominated courses want support such as:

  • Social contact and support particularly at particular points in their educational experience,
  • Contact with women working in the field, and
  • Careers advice and links with industry.

What will Ayrshire Connects do?

Ayrshire Connects will provide:

  • Opportunities to meet female students in similar situations to reduce isolation and build confidence,
  • Contact with women professionals providing role models of successful career development, and
  • Opportunities to build links with industry and potential employers.

Information on Ayrshire Connects will be available to students at the start of the new semester.

The launch of Ayrshire Connects took place at our Ayr campus on Monday 13 June 2016 in the week that we held the first ever Mission Discovery programme in Ayrshire, an incredible week-long space school for 200 pupils and students. Sarah Murray, Assistant Chief of EVA, Robotics & Crew Systems at NASA, was part of the team delivering the Mission Discovery programme and she delivered the keynote speech to the Ayrshire Connects audience.

Photos from the event can be viewed on our Flickr account here.

Student members of Ayrshire Connects will decide on future events.
