Can you provide basic digital skills and advice to deaf or hard of hearing people to inspire confidence online?

What will I get out of it?

· Training – learning new skills, and gaining up-to-date knowledge of issues affecting deaf and hard of hearing people;

· Experience – meeting new people in different situations, building new friendships with other Action on Hearing Loss volunteers;

· Fulfilment – knowing that the information you provide will make a real difference to those who receive it, and raising deaf awareness throughout society as a whole;

· Expenses – all expenses incurred as a result of your volunteering will be reimbursed, according to the Action on Hearing Loss expenses policy;

· Opportunity to try other volunteering roles within Action on Hearing Loss.

 

What will I be doing?

· Assist with delivery of taster technology awareness sessions, to give either deaf or hard of hearing people the skills and confidence to take advantage of the benefits of being online.

· Assist with capturing feedback on each session.

· Check whether venue is accessible (e.g. loop facility, quiet room, good lighting) and bring portable loop if needed prior to a session

· Promote the work of Action on Hearing Loss Scotland

 

What skills and qualities do I need?

· Interest in internet capable technology and how it can benefit people who have are either deaf of have a hearing loss.

· Understanding of online services such as email, social networking and online shopping

· Ability to work with a wide range of people, including those with a resistance to new technology

· knowledge of or willingness to learn about issues affecting deaf and hard of hearing people

· friendly, reliable and approachable manner;

· ability to listen to questions and to answer appropriately;

 

Training/Learning needed

Action on Hearing Loss offers full, on-going training for all volunteers including an induction programme and further training specific to the volunteering role.

This may include:

· Full training provided on technology and online services

· Sessions on Manual Handling, Dealing with the Public, and Equipment

· Volunteers also have the opportunity to attend other information sessions.

 

Disclosure: You will be required to become a member of the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme for this role.

Support and supervision Regular support will be given by your Volunteer Co-ordinator, especially in the early stages of your role as you settle in. You will also receive informal support from other volunteers as you work together and attend each other's sessions.
