Trainee Forest Craftsperson

 

 

Eligibility 

This opportunity is part funded through the  North Ayrshire Council and Forestry Commission Scotland Employment Skills programmes. Eligibility is restricted young adults between 18 - 24 years of age,  not in employment, education, or training. Individuals must be resident within North Ayrshire

 

Work Coaches based in local Job Centres are best placed to advise on eligibility.

Applicant Attributes

Suitable candidates will have a strong preference for working in an outdoor environment and a genuine interest in forestry, grounds maintenance and natural heritage. Ideally applicants will have some experience of undertaking physically demanding work and using manually operated mechanical plant such as strimmers, mowers, quick-cut, etc.

 

Individuals should be prepared to contribute to efficient and effective team work, and willing to learn new skills. Punctuality, flexibility, politeness and respect for others are valued qualities.

 

Pre-Employment Programme

Prior to confirming a full-time position East Ayrshire Woodlands offers a short period (2 weeks) of pre-employment induction. The purpose of this period is to provide both the job applicant and the organisation an opportunity to evaluate whether  work as a forest craftsperson is appropriate for the individual. During this time job applicants will receive a comprehensive health and safety induction, the opportunity to take part in a range of forestry/grounds maintenance tasks on a range of sites in North Ayrshire, and gain an insight into the forest industry.

 

Duration of Job

All participants will have an employment contract for 26 weeks.  Contract continuation is subject to satisfactory attendance, positive attitude and achievement of vocational qualifications.

 

Training content

Individuals will agree a Personal Development Plan at commencement which will include identification of appropriate accredited vocational courses.

 

Formal vocational training is focused toward NPTC/City & Guilds accredited courses (eg. Woodchipper operation, Brushcutter/Strimmer operation, Pesticide Application –PA1/PA6AW and basic chainsaw operation – 201/202/203).

 

Depending on work activities opportunities may arise for individuals to gain some experience and unaccredited training fencing erection, tractor driving, skidding and forwarding, path construction, tree planting and protection, etc.

 

Hours of work:

Monday to Thursday 9am to 4pm, Friday 9am to 1:30pm with 30 minute break (unwaged):  Total 30 hours per week.

 

Wages: 

The initial 2 week induction period is unwaged and participants will remain on benefits. Following successful progression from induction, participants can transfer to employment at the statutory minimum wage level for their age-group set by Government. Currently this is £6.95/hour for 21+ year olds and £5.60 for 18-20 year olds.

 

Wages are paid two weeks in arrears. This means that the first pay is paid into your bank account in the third week of employment.

Initial enquiries should be made through local Job Centres. Start dates are preferably arranged to allow groups of participants to commence work placement together.
