Ayr Graduation 2019: Making a Difference in the Community Award

October 7, 2019 - Martin Currie

I started crying in my car when I was told I’d won this award! I’ve not been able to stop smiling since

Kerry Charleton, HNC Childhood Practice

I wanted to come to college so that I had a qualification to work with children in an early year setting. I already worked for a company called Baby Sensory, but they do not issue qualifications nor do they need you to hold a qualification to work with them.

Of course, I was nervous about starting college as a mature student. I had to leave my job with Baby Sensory in North and East Ayrshire, but quickly got a job with them in South Ayrshire. Although I found it difficult to study and meet deadlines while working full-time.

I’ve gained many new skills through my course and I’m now able to deliver more in-depth information at my work.

My placement was at an Early Years Centre and Ioved being able to work with children from 3 to 5 years old. The placement was very beneficial and enjoyable, I even got involved in raising funds for their sensory room which was an amazing experience.

I have no words to describe how much I appreciate winning this award. I was extremely shocked to have been told I’d won – I started crying in my car when I was told! I’ve not been able to stop smiling since.

It’s made a huge difference to my confidence and self-esteem. It’s given me a boost to conduct my classes with confidence again.

My experience at Ayrshire College had its challenges but the staff at the Ayr Campus are amazing and I’d recommend it to everyone.
