This award will constantly remind me that if I continue to work hard, I will achieve everything I set out to do

I came to college because I saw it as the best route for progressing into university for nursing.

I had a few concerns before starting college. The main one was my age. I worried that I would struggle to fit in and would find it difficult to find common ground with the younger students. I was also worried about the length of time I had been out of education. Would I struggle to find the time to study while juggling family life?

At the beginning of the course, I struggled academically. If I’m honest there was a time where I thought I might leave the course. I opened up to my lecturers about how I was feeling and we decided I should seek extra support from the college’s Inclusive Learning team.

Inclusive Learning thought I might benefit from being screened for dyslexia. When the results came back I was surprised to find out that I was dyslexic. After the initial shock, there was a sense of relief. I felt I’d been trying my hardest for years but was failing to progress, and now finally I knew the reason why.

I worked extremely hard to achieve my HNC and it’s nice to know that hard work didn’t go unnoticed. This award will constantly remind me that if I continue to work hard, I will achieve everything I set out to do. It will also give me the confidence to continue when things may seem too difficult.

I’m now studying at the University of the West of Scotland in Paisley, as well as working as a support worker for people with learning difficulties.

I cannot fault my time at Ayrshire College and would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the staff for their time and support. An extra special thanks to my classmates, who I could not have done this without. Best of luck to you all!
