Foundation Apprentices Summer Placements - Brandon and Louise's Story

August 19, 2019 - Jane Moore

It’s that time of year again, when the Engineering Foundation Apprentices have finished year 1 of their course, and start their summer placement.

The placement involves two weeks working at a local engineering company, where they get the opportunity to experience the different types of jobs and routes available in their chosen industry.

We caught up with some of the FA’s who selected Spirit Aerosystems for their summer placement.

Brandon Leckie - Kilwinning Academy

I like the different environments between school and college. It feels more like a workplace at college, also it’s a bit more relaxed and the Lecturers are really good. The course hasn’t been too difficult this year, although I think it’ll get more difficult next year, a bit more technical. Some days we’re doing hands-on practical work, then other days its more theory based.

I've really enjoyed the work placement. It’s been a benefit because I've got to experience what actually happens in the workplace, and I feel like I’ve got a better idea of what to expect once I start working. I’ve been going to different areas of the business, so we get to experience a lot of different things. I get to go to the hangars for example, as well as departments such as Quality where they produce reports. It’s really varied which is good.

I’d like to get an apprenticeship next year, but if that wasn’t to happen, I’d go back to college and study an HNC. Eventually I’d like to be a licensed engineer, qualified to work with aircraft.

Louise Reid - Carrick Academy

The Foundation Apprenticeship has set me up for life. It’s a brilliant stepping-stone into either a Modern Apprenticeship job or employment and made me excited for what the future holds.

My parents have said it’s a great opportunity for me and will help me develop as a person – no matter what my career choice is.

It’s helped me realise that I’m more of a practical learner. I could never do a job where I’m just sat in an office – that’s just not for me.

My favourite part has been learning about aero fundamentals, especially flight control within the plane. Going to college has developed my self-confidence and independence, as well as giving me an insight into the industry.

I’d like to either get an apprenticeship or an accelerated apprenticeship in the Royal Navy. I’ve been brought up around boats, and its my ambition to work with boats, and get to see the world at the same time.
