Let's talk about the Foundation Apprenticeship in Social Services for Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2019

March 5, 2019 - Katie Ralston

Apprenticeship opportunities in Scotland are growing and we want as many young people and employers as possible to benefit. With that in mind this year’s theme is ‘Skills for the Future’, recognising the importance of investing in our workforce.

Foundation Apprenticeships are school-based apprenticeship that pupils can study as part of their school timetable. We have seen some fantastic results from these courses so far, including our Foundation Apprentice of the Year and Scottish Apprentice of the Year Fraser Wallace.

Our Foundation Apprenticeship in Social Services Children and Young People has been a huge hit at the Kilmarnock campus this year. We caught up with twins Tegan and Naomi Myers, who both study the course, to find out what they think about it and what they hope to do in the future.

Tegan Myers

I choose to study the Foundation Apprenticeship because I would like to work with children when I leave school. This is a good opportunity for me to learn what activities to do with them.

Alongside the course I am studying Biology, English, Computing and Drama at school.

The course is really good, we learn about child development and what would best suit the child depending on them. I like the way the course is structured and it is good being in a different learning environment.

I am hoping to come to College, maybe on a Modern Apprenticeship programme, and then move into a full-time job. I would like to be a Nurse for children or a Primary school teacher.

Naomi Myers

This course will help me get a career working with children. I find it really interesting studying how children learn and how their brain develops throughout the years, and this course covers all that. Alongside the course I am studying English, Maths, French and health and food technology (mix of Nat 5 and Highers) at school.

I like the theory aspect of the course. I am enjoying learning how children develop. The course is what I expected and I can’t say there is any challenges.

I plan to go to College then University. I think I would like to work with children with additional support needs.
