Considering a career in Youth Work? Start here...

June 6, 2020 - Emma McIlvanney

Youth Work and Communities (Level 6) introduces students to Community Learning and Development. You’ll spend 3 days in college learning how to help individuals and groups improve their lives and their communities.

You’ll investigate the different types of community and youth work groups and look closely at issues affecting young people today such as mental health, addiction, poverty, equality and much more.

We caught up with this year's class who told us what they love about the course…

Megan

“After leaving school I knew that this course would help me progress further towards the career I want.

It involves looking at different aspects of society and issues that young people face. If you have an open mind it can change your views.

The College is well set out and full of resources. I’ve learned so much, gained new skills and created great memories.”

Lorraine

“Before coming to college I worked as a Cook in a children’s care home. Working with young people in a unit had an impact on me and I decided that cooking was no longer the road I wanted to continue on. I want to help and support vulnerable people.

I was concerned about my age and the length of time I had been out of education but I’m proud that I pushed myself out of my comfort zone and realised I'm capable of more than I thought.

I’ve developed more self-esteem and I enjoyed learning new skills. I’ve even gained basic ICT skills - I had none before.

Ayrshire College is a great environment with great lecturers and plenty of support. This course opens so many opportunities.”

Deborah

“I came to college as I wanted to change career. I was concerned about not knowing people and being dyslexic but the staff, facilities and layout make it a great environment in which to learn.

The course covers a wide range topics. If you’re strong minded and like to engage in discussions you can really make the most of it. I enjoyed meeting new friends and learning about others norms and values.

My experience has opened my eyes to view things differently and I plan to move onto HNC Additional Support Needs.”

Donna

“Before coming to college I was a busy single parent. This course has broadened my horizons – it’s great.

There’s lots of group discussions, presentations and role play, so my listening and talking skills have improved. I gained a real insight to every subject and particularly enjoyed the mental health part.

I’d like to progress to HNC Social Services and help children who have suffered trauma or who generally need help.”

We still have places available for 20/21. If you’d like to be a positive role model and help young people be the best that they can be – apply now!
