What's Involved

This course is designed to prepare talented musicians for further study at either HNC or university level.

To be successful on this course, you'll need to be a confident performer in terms of technique, but also understand that working as a musician involves knowledge of recording, composition or songwriting, and business.

Here's some of what you'll be doing:
- You'll focus on your own music performance, developing your instrumental or vocal skills and performing as a solo artist, as well as part of a band.
- You'll look at songwriting, learning about the way lyrics and melody combine to create a successful song, and then developing your own songwriting skills.
- You'll learn how to understand notation, including staff and musical notation symbols, harmony and basic chord function.
- You'll look at sound engineering and production, learning how to use multi-track recording equipment to record and mix audio.
- You'll learn how to use a MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) sequencer to create, edit and mix music.
- You'll develop music business know-how, looking at the key organisations and careers within the UK music industry, as well as promotion.
- You'll build transferable Essential Skills in meaningful contexts to help you become more effective in life, learning, and work. This could be communication, numeracy, ICT, working with others, and problem solving.

You'll also have the opportunity to perform regularly at:
- Live gigs in the college theatre, and local pubs and clubs around Ayrshire
- Outdoor gigs, such as Jam at the Dam in Ayr
