What's Involved

This course builds on the HNC in Aircraft Engineering, developing your existing knowledge and giving you even more of an understanding of aircraft engineering to meet the needs of employers.

You’ll expand your knowledge of key aircraft engineering systems, including flight controls, hydraulics, fuel, electrical and avionic. You’ll also look in more detail at environmental systems, including air conditioning, cabin pressurisation and oxygen systems.

You’ll develop your knowledge of aerodynamics and flight mechanics, including stability in flight, how design improves aerodynamic efficiency and high speed aerodynamics.

You’ll look specifically at gas turbine engines for aircraft or helicopters, including turbojet, turbofan, turboprop and turboshaft engines. You’ll learn about engine installation, along with ancillary drive transmission systems.

You’ll look at composite materials, learning about the composition, manufacture, properties and characterisation of advanced composite materials

You’ll expand your knowledge of fluid mechanics, looking at flow patterns and flow types and how to solve flow measurement problems using fundamental engineering principles. You’ll also look at heat transfer, including modes of heat transfer, rate of heat transfer and heat exchangers.

You’ll explore aircraft electrical and electronic principles, along with the basic components involved in avionic and electrical systems.

When you successfully complete this course, you'll have the choice of:

• Moving onto a degree course at university such as:

- (via our articulation arrangements) BEng Mechanical Engineering at Glasgow Caledonian University or BEng Aircraft Engineering at UWS (direct entry to year 3)

- entry to 1st year at the University of Glasgow (requires completion of Engineering Mathematics 5)

- entry to 2nd year at the University of Strathclyde (requires completion of Engineering Mathematics 5 and obtaining a certain standard for all Engineering Mathematics modules)

• Seeking to start your career in aircraft engineering, with a Modern Apprenticeship or employment.

Local employers often come to us to recruit students from this course as employees and/or apprentices, including Collins Aerospace, Spirit, Ryanair, GEO Caledonian, BAMG.
