Skilled office administrators are needed in every type of business and organisation to help it run efficiently. In the health sector - such as a GP surgery, clinic, health centre or hospital - admin roles are a bit different. Here, staff must have more specialised office skills, which are geared towards working in a medical environment. If you’d like to work in an administrative role in the health sector, then this course is ideal for you.

For entry to this course you’ll need:

  • A real interest in working in administration, specifically in a medical environment
  • Three National 4s or three relevant Standard Grades at General Level OR a relevant NC course at Level 4 or equivalent
  • An interview with us

If you don’t have formal qualifications, but have life experience, then we’ll also consider you for a place, so please call us for a chat.

What's Involved

This course will give you the skills and knowledge you’ll need to work effectively in a medical office environment.

Since you’ll be working with doctors, nurses and other medical specialists, you’ll need to be able to talk their language. So you’ll begin by learning medical terminology for a broad range of conditions, tests and treatments -  what they mean, how to spell them and how to pronounce them correctly.

Then it’s time to put your new vocabulary into practise! You’ll develop your word processing and layout skills to create documents incorporating medical terminology. You’ll also learn to use audio and produce medical documents from recorded instructions.

You’ll learn how to carry out medical reception duties, such as patient registration, making appointments and dealing with enquiries. You’ll look at medical admin, including how to maintain patient records, retrieve case notes, deal with patients and operate follow up systems.

You’ll also explore the health sector in Scotland, and what health and social care provision there is available.

Along the way, we’ll help you develop your skills for employment, such as working as part of a team and creating a CV to get you noticed.

You’ll also build transferable Essential Skills in meaningful contexts to help you become more effective in life, learning, and work. This could be communication, numeracy, ICT, working with others, and problem solving.

Finally, you’ll have the chance to gain valuable work experience in a local hospital or GP surgery.

Go Anywhere

When you successfully complete this course, you’ll have the choice of:

  • Moving onto a Level 6 course such as NC Administration or NC Business with Accounts

  • Seeking employment in a medical secretary or admin role in a GP surgery, clinic, health centre or hospital
