Working in barbering is both exciting and challenging. It’s part of a diverse and ever evolving industry which is continuously launching new products and techniques. Barbering professionals are at the heart of this, helping to create and maintain current trends.
To be successful in this profession you need to be passionate, creative, committed and hardworking. You also need to be self-motivated, a good team player and enjoy working with people.
If you’re qualified in ladies’ hairdressing and want to develop your skills in gents barbering further or are already experienced in the Barbering field and want to gain Barbering accreditation, this is the course for you.
For entry to this course you’ll need:
- A real interest in barbering
- A relevant course at SCQF Level 5 or equivalent
To submit an application, completing all sections, including Personal Statement in full. NB we may notify you of the outcome by letter and/or invite you to attend an interview.
Demonstrable knowledge and skill in hairdressing/ barbering and a qualification @ SCQF level 5 is essential to be considered for a place on this course. Previous salon experience is also essential.
This course develops current barbering skills, developing your creative and practical skills, and technical knowledge.
You’ll train in one of our on-campus commercial salons, working with real clients, as you develop your consultation, cutting, shaving/beard shaping and styling techniques.
Here’s just some of what you may study:
Cutting – you’ll develop your creative cutting techniques using a range of tools and equipment
Shaving and facial hair – you’ll develop your skills within shaving using a range of products, tools and equipment
Consultation – you’ll develop you consultation techniques to consult with your clients professionally to fulfil their requirements
You’ll also have the chance to develop your skills and creativity through:
Taking part in competitions such as the Association of Hairdressers and Therapists Annual Competition (AHT)
Volunteering for community projects such as fashion shows or drama productions
Organising fundraising events for charity
Learning from industry experts and industry training days
Exploring your future career options which could include:
Seeking to start your career as a salon based or self-employed Gents Barber
When you successfully complete this course, you may have the choice of:

Salon/Session/Self-employed Barber, barbering aboard a Cruise Ship, in TV/Film/Theatre, as a barbering Trainer/Educator.
