SVQ Performing Engineering Operations - Aeronautical at SCQF Level 5 (August Start)

Aeronautics is a high profile industry which focuses on the design and manufacture of a wide range of aircraft, systems and equipment. It also involves the maintenance and repair of aircraft products. Aerospace offers superb career opportunities for those who are technical, practical and genuinely fascinated by flight. It’s a key sector within the Ayrshire economy and we work very closely with local employers, ensuring our courses offer the skills and training they look for in employees.
If you're considering a career in engineering - and in particular aeronautical - this course can help you on your way. It also contains the 8 credits of the SVQ Level 2 which form part of the Modern Apprenticeship in Engineering.
For entry to this course you'll need:
A real interest in working in engineering
Three National 4s or equivalent preferably in English and Maths, with one other relevant subject such as Physics, Practical Metalworking or Practical Woodworking OR
a relevant NC course at SCQF Level 4 or equivalent

This course is extremely practical, teaching you the basic hand skills needed to work successfully in the aviation industry. Most of your time will be spent in our state of the art Aeronautical Engineering Training Centre which offers workshops, a composites lab, ICT and a hangar.
There’s just a bit of theory, which includes some physics and maths, relevant to an engineering context. You’ll also look at topics such as how to use technical information like engineering drawings and skills for working effectively in an engineering post, such as good planning. We’ll also spend a small amount of time developing your core skills for employment, such as working as part of a team.
Here’s just some of what you’ll be doing:
- You’ll start by learning to produce components using hand fitting techniques. You’ll use a wide range of hand and portable power tools to carry out activities such as hand sawing, filing, drilling and riveting.
- You’ll look at the process for producing mechanical assemblies such as a pulley bracket and box assembly, and will carry out different assembly operations.
- You’ll work with composites and learn to produce composite mouldings using wet lay-up techniques, and produce composite assemblies.
- You’ll develop skills in carrying out aircraft detail fitting activities and produce a range of aircraft detail assemblies, including stringers, frames, panels and trays.
- You’ll learn how to install different types of aircraft mechanical fasteners, such as rivets, anchor nuts, pins and other locking devices.
- You’ll build transferable Essential Skills in meaningful contexts to help you become more effective in life, learning, and work. This could be communication, numeracy, ICT, working with others, and problem solving.
Finally, you’ll learn how to use a Computer Aided Draughting (CAD) system, producing models in a 3D environment.
When you successfully complete this course, you'll have the choice of:
Seeking to start your career in aeronautical engineering, with employment as a sheet metal worker or as a Modern Apprentice (This course is the foundation qualification for a Modern Apprenticeship in Engineering)
Moving onto a Level 6 course (if you have the Maths and Physics units) such as NC Aeronautical Engineering, NC Electrical Engineering, NC Electrical and Electronic Engineering, NC Mechanical Engineering
Local employers often come to us to recruit students from this course as employees and/or apprentices, including Collins Aerospace, Spirit, Ryanair, GE Caledonian, BAMG.
