If you’re interested in a career in the uniformed or emergency services, such as the Police, Fire or Ambulance Service, the Armed Forces or Prison Service, this course is a great place to start.

For entry to this course you’ll need:

  • National 5 qualifications and 1 Higher (A-C) or equivalent OR a pass in a relevant NC course at SCQF Level 4/5
  • An interview with us

If you don’t have formal qualifications, but have life experience, then we’ll also consider you for a place, so please call us for a chat.

What's Involved

This course introduces you to the knowledge and skills you’ll need to work successfully in government vocations, including communications, teamwork, leadership and many more. Many of the fact finding and practical tasks you’ll undertake mirror jobs and processes in the real workplace.

The course has excellent partnerships, working with the police, army, coastguard and fire service. You’ll make regular visits to the various services base locations, and hear from guest lecturers in the classroom to make sure you’re well informed in your specific area of interest.

Here’s just some of what you’ll be doing:

  • Psychology - you’ll explore why understanding people and their motivations helps you form better working relationships.
  • First Aid - you’ll learn how to react if you’re first on the scene of an accident.
  • Health, Fitness and Wellbeing - in every uniform service you need to remain physically fit to be effective, so we’ll make sure you know how.
  • Social Issues - conflict resolution is a key skill to develop, but you’ll start by learning how social issues affect communities.
  • Engaging in the Community/Volunteering - you’ll gain real, on the ground experience of working within your community, for example with community, school and elderly groups, giving you the skills and social understanding required to offer the public a valued service.
  • Outdoor Activities - for many uniformed services you need to be ready for anything, so you’ll hone your skills through activities like hillwalking and orienteering.
  • Teambuilding - leadership is important but working together will get the job done, so you’ll develop your skills in teamwork.
  • You’ll build transferable Essential Skills in meaningful contexts to help you become more effective in life, learning, and work. This could be communication, numeracy, ICT, working with others, and problem solving.

Go Anywhere

When you successfully complete this course, you’ll have the choice of:

  • Applying to the various Uniformed and Emergency Services, for example Police, Fire, Ambulance, Coastguard, Army, Navy and Air Force.
  • Moving onto HNC level in a wide variety of courses such as HNC Social Sciences or HNC Coaching and Developing Sport
  • Exploring a number of career opportunities in the public, private and voluntary sectors, including the Police or Fire Service, Paramedics, Army, Navy, RAF, Coastguard, Probation Officer or the Prison Service.
