For entry to this course you don’t need any formal qualifications - what you must have is a real interest in cooking and a desire to work in the fast paced and highly enjoyable hospitality industry. The course is designed to suit anyone coming in with no experience of a professional kitchen, or if you have completed our August start programme.

What's involved

This is a ‘hands on' course which will introduce you to what’s involved in working in an industrial kitchen, and help you develop the skills and techniques you’ll need for working in hospitality.

You’ll start by learning about different food products and how to prepare food for cooking. You’ll work with a wide range of ingredients to produce dishes at restaurant standard - just like you see the professionals doing on TV! You’ll also do a bit of baking, including bread and dough.

You’ll build transferable Essential Skills in meaningful contexts to help you become more effective in life, learning, and work. This could be communication, numeracy, ICT, working with others, and problem solving.

Along the way, you’ll learn about various aspects of working successfully in a kitchen, such as food hygiene and safety. We’ll also help you develop your skills for employment, including working as part of a team.

This course includes a lot of real work experience in a variety of industry outlets.

And like all our hospitality courses, you could have the chance to:

  • Participate in real functions such as business events or bespoke dinners
  • Go on visits to restaurants, pubs, clubs or hotels
  • Join in Masterclasses from local industry professionals
  • <.li>Hear top tips on how to get ahead in hospitality from leading employers, successful venue owners and industry suppliers
  • Take part in competitions to put your new skills to the test – with prizes of course!

  • Moving on to a relevant course at the next level to advance your skills and knowledge e.g. Professional Cookery (Level 5) or Food and Beverage Service (Level 5)
  • Applying for jobs in the hospitality industry, such as a kitchen assistant in a hotel, restaurant or bar
