Blair Larmour, UPM Caledonian Paper
Blair has worked at Caledonian Paper Mill in Irvine since August 2013, successfully completing a four-year Modern Apprenticeship as an Instrument Technician in August 2017.
During this time, he attended Forth Valley College to complete an HND in Measurement and Control while also being assigned to Ayrshire College in Kilmarnock for his Modern Apprenticeship and log book.
During Blair’s time as an apprentice he was dedicated and diligent in all aspects and regularly exceeded expectations.
He was also added to the mill engineering call out team as a 4th year apprentice, which was previously only done on completion of an apprenticeship.
He gained experience in various parts of the plant process, learning the basics of his trade before moving onto higher skills.
On completion of his apprenticeship in September 2017, Blair was nominated for Apprentice of the Year for the Irvine Incorporated Traded covering Ayrshire.
He successfully won this award and was asked to speak at the launch of the 2018 Apprentice of the Year award, at the Air Traffic Control Centre in Prestwick. Here he spoke to the audience about his experiences during his apprenticeship and took part in the Q&A session. The audience included local company representatives who are actively involved in employing apprentices.
In September 2017, Blair was offered a full-time position within UPM to work as an Instrument Technician, where he is still currently working.
This role includes working in all areas of the mill carrying out preventative maintenance, corrective repairs and project work as required. This involves daily interaction with production colleagues and use of a computerised maintenance management system.
On completion of his apprenticeship, Blair was quickly seen as a peer within UPM’s Automation department. This resulted in him being given additional responsibility to solely look after critical automation equipment within certain areas of the production process.
He also has been assigned an Instrument Apprentice who Blair works closely with him on a daily basis, passing on his knowledge and assisting with college work as required. He also helps apprentices from other trades when they are looking for assistance or advice.
Blair is an asset to the Engineering Department at Caledonian Paper and has a bright future in engineering.
