Ayr United footballers take on cooking challenge at Ayrshire College

Ayrshire College recently hosted a squad of budding chefs from Ayr United’s first team for a special MasterChef challenge.

Ten footballers took part in the challenge at Ayrshire College’s Westerly training restaurant kitchen, cooking a main meal to be judged by a panel of taste experts including Ayr United manager Lee Bullen and chairman David Smith. They were assisted in the kitchen by Dougal MacPherson, Hospitality lecturer at Ayrshire College.

Sam Ashford was crowned the winner with his dish of fish and chips.

Richard Canale, Curriculum Manager of Hospitality at Ayrshire College, said: “Sam’s simple fish and chips were certainly not the most complex dish of the day, but his eye for detail and carrying out each element to a high standard won the competition. There were other excellent dishes with a more complex nature that didn’t just hit the mark down to presentation, seasoning and overall taste. The secret to being a good chef is taste, taste, taste!

“Overall the skills of the footballers easily succeeded our expectations and there were clearly some good skills on show on the day. Well done Ayr United, you’re welcome back into our kitchens any time.”

Having enjoyed the experience so much, Ayr United have decided to book their Christmas lunch at Westerly this year.

Westerly still has a few dates remaining for Christmas lunches if you would like to book. For more information, call 01292 293010.
