Ayrshire College Receives Wind Tunnel from Prestwick Royal Aeronautical Society, Enhancing Aerospace Education
Ayrshire College has strengthened its aeronautical engineering program with the addition of a new wind tunnel, generously loaned by the Prestwick branch of the Royal Aeronautical Society. This equipment, designed and manufactured by local expert Ian Adams, offers significant educational benefits, providing students with practical, hands-on experience in aerodynamics and airflow analysis—crucial areas of study for careers in aerospace and engineering.
The new wind tunnel was showcased at the International Ayr Show – Festival of Flight 2024, where attendees witnessed its capabilities first-hand. This equipment complements the College’s existing fixed wind tunnel, expanding the College’s resources to support flexible, classroom-based learning. Students will now have the opportunity to conduct experiments within a classroom environment, enabling them to directly apply theoretical concepts to real-world aeronautical challenges.
Angela Cox, Principal and Chief Executive of Ayrshire College, expressed her gratitude and highlighted the long-term benefits of the donation:
"We are very grateful to the Prestwick branch of the Royal Aeronautical Society for their generosity. The wind tunnel will provide an exciting and invaluable resource for our students, allowing them to engage further with the study of aerodynamics and gain practical skills that align with industry demands. Partnerships like this help us create a rich learning environment and support the future of aerospace in Ayrshire and beyond."
The new wind tunnel will play a key role in enhancing the learning experience for students enrolled in Ayrshire College’s engineering and aeronautical programs. Its portability allows it to be easily integrated into classroom lessons, giving students more hands-on opportunities to explore topics like airflow, drag, lift, and other critical principles of flight.
Mr Tim Allen FRAeS Chairman of the Prestwick branch of the Royal Aeronautical Society emphasised the importance of supporting local education:
"We’re delighted to loan this wind tunnel to Ayrshire College. It’s crucial that students have access to the latest tools and technologies to help them fully understand the principles of aerodynamics. This is our way of helping to inspire and equip the next generation of aerospace engineers, and we’re excited to continue our partnership with the College.”
