What is Lean Six Sigma?

Applicable to any industry and a wide variety of roles.

Lean Six Sigma is a method that relies on a collaborative team effort to improve performances by systematically removing waste and reducing variation. Lean Six Sigma is a set of principles and methods for process improvement in all forms of work.

Most of its tools and techniques have been developed over many decades and even centuries… however the term ‘Lean’ was introduced during the effective implementation of these principles, methods, tools and techniques by the Toyota car manufacturing industry from the 1950s through to the 1980s, which developed into the Toyota Production System (TPS).

The term ‘Six Sigma’ was first coined by Motorola in the 1980s as the name for their quality improvement program. Six Sigma is a data-driven approach to eliminate defects and reduce variation in processes, and whilst developed by Motorola, it evolved side-by-side with Lean. Although once independent entities, they were combined in the early 2000’s and offer an effective methodology for process improvement, waste reduction and increase profitability.
