Overview

Gain valuable skills which support you to carry out administrative roles, at intermediate/senior level, within a medical environment. The PDA meets the needs of both private and public sector organisations.

Entry Requirements

Candidates should have some prior knowledge of numeracy, ICT and communication to SCQF level 6, although formal qualifications may not be necessary if suitable experience had been gained informally or through work experience.

Course Content

  • Medical Terminology for Administration Staff: Develop your knowledge on how to construct medical words using roots, prefixes and suffixes and understand their meanings. Learn about the structure and physiology of the human body.
  • Hospital Patient Administration: Find out about the roles, staff responsibilities, procedures, and legislation within the context of NHS Scotland.
  • GP Medical Administration: This unit will prepare you for the role of Medical Secretary within NHS Scotland General Practice.
  • IT in Business: Word Processing and Presentation Applications: Develop your skills and knowledge in word processing and presentation packages to aid business communication.  
  • IT in Business: Spreadsheets: Understand spreadsheet design and how to use spreadsheet features and functions for practical and effective use in a business environment.
  • IT in Business: Databases:  Learn the principles of database design and the use of database management software to aid decision-making in business.

Next Steps and Career Opportunities

On completion of this course, you may:

  • progress to an HNC such as Accounting, Business, and Administration and IT.
  • build your qualification part-time towards a full HNC by undertaking further PDAs and/or HN units.
  • start your career as an administrator within the NHS.
