Ayrshire College hosts football festival for deaf children

A hearing impaired football festival for primary school children was held at Ayrshire College on Wednesday 5 June, in partnership between the Scottish Football Association (SFA) and the Ayrshire Hearing Impairment Service.

The event ran from 10am to 1:30pm and consisted of fun coaching and small-sided games on Ayrshire College’s full size artificial grass pitch.

The aim of the event was to provide deaf children with an opportunity to meet up with each other from across the West of Scotland for a day of football, fun and friendship.

The event was led by SFA professional coaches and supported by members of the SFA’s VIP programme, which a number of Ayrshire College Sport & Fitness students are involved in.

Kenny Fraser of Ayrshire Hearing Impairment Service said “The football festival for deaf children was a fantastic success, with over 100 children taking part from all across Scotland. It was a day of football, fun and friendship and all of the children had a ball!

“A huge thank you must go to the South West region of the SFA, Ayrshire College for hosting the festival and providing students to facilitate it, and the West of Scotland Deaf Children’s Society for advertising the event and providing water, fruit and sweets for all of the children.”

John McTaggart, Curriculum Manager for Sport & Fitness at Ayrshire College, said “We’re delighted to be able to host this year’s festival. Our students look forward to this event every year as there is always a great atmosphere and energy. The organisers do a great job in providing a fun environment for the participants to enjoy and express themselves, and it’s great that Ayrshire College is able to play a small part in that."
