Construction students look to build on success

Students at Ayrshire College have been celebrating after successfully completing a taster course in Construction.

The Introduction to Bricklaying Construction Site Operations course was organised in partnership with Morrison Construction and the South Ayrshire Council Employability team. As well as giving the students a flavour of what to expect in each area of the construction industry, the course included a trip to one of Morrison Construction’s main sites – the Barony Campus in Cumnock.

Many of the students have now enrolled onto courses starting in August as they look towards a career in construction, while one member of the group has been offered an apprenticeship.

Peter Bitten, 17 from Ayr, who will continue his college learning on a Level 4 Bricklaying course, said “It was an enjoyable course. I’d never done bricklaying before but it was a great experience because you got to work at your own pace. I enjoyed working with the tools.”

Jim Johnstone, Economic Performance Manager at Morrison Construction, said “This initiative demonstrates the strong working partnership between Morrison Construction, Ayrshire College and South Ayrshire Council, and has ensured young people have been given an opportunity to learn more about the careers available in the industry.

“We were delighted to host the group at our £68m Barony Campus project in Cumnock, providing the valuable experience of visiting an active site. It is wonderful to know that 9 of the 13 young people who participated in this course are now actively pursuing their aspirations for a career in construction.”
