Ayrshire College brings together groups to talk about suicide prevention

Ayrshire College is proud to host a new series of events specifically designed to focus on suicide prevention and awareness within the community.

The College's Mental Health Liaison Officer, Michelle Morton, alongside several staff members, hosted the first of these innovative get-togethers at each campus over three days in March.

The S-Word: Pathways of Hope brings together a marketplace of local and national mental health and suicide prevention organisations and services for students and college staff to speak to and gather information on the great work these organisations do in suicide prevention and awareness.

Events took place at Kilmarnock Campus on Tuesday, March 19, the College’s Riverside Campus in Ayr on Wednesday, March 20 and Kilwinning Campus on Thursday, March 21. Ms Morton hopes that The S-Word: Pathways of Hope will become an annual event across the three campuses.

Michelle Morton, Mental Health Liaison Officer, said: “We were delighted to host this great event where we are bringing together charities and organisations such as Penumbra, Papyrus, Beautiful Inside and Out, NHS Ayrshire & Arran, and Police Scotland.

“We have sadly seen our student population being impacted by suicide in many ways — and we hope that the messages of hope being promoted will begin to create heartfelt conversations and a little more confidence in just checking in on each other and not being scared to ask the direct question, ‘Have you been thinking about suicide?’"
